The Mumbai Police have arrested a 36-year-old software developer from Madhya Pradesh for allegedly creating and distributing malicious APK files to cybercriminals throughout India. The developer, who had dropped out of a B.Tech course in 2011, is accused of supplying around 2,805 such applications, which authorities say have been used in defrauding at least 9,673 individuals across the country.
The case was registered at the Byculla police station under Sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, with the investigation later directed to the Property Cell of the Mumbai Crime Branch. This arrest followed an investigation into a separate case where a 72-year-old senior citizen from Mumbai allegedly lost ₹5.62 lakh after downloading an APK called "Senior Citizen Card Verification.apk" after being contacted by someone claiming to be a Bank of India relationship manager.
Police have seized equipment from the accused, including a laptop, mobile phones, hard disks, and a pen drive, suggesting ties to server infrastructure used by various companies. Further investigations are ongoing to trace the cybercriminal network and identify any additional victims.
