NUGS condemns alleged sexual abuse by suspended Obuasi SHS headmaster

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has strongly condemned the alleged sexual abuse of a female student by the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School. In a statement, NUGS emphasized the gravity of the allegation, stating that school authorities possess the duty to safeguard students from harm rather than subjecting them to such abuse.

The union highlighted the broader issue of sexual harassment, intimidation, and abuse of authority affecting female students in senior high schools and tertiary institutions, emphasizing that no student should endure such treatment during their educational pursuits.

NUGS urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) and relevant investigative bodies to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter, ensuring the affected student receives appropriate counseling and support. They also requested that the student's identity and dignity be protected throughout the investigation process, preventing any intimidation or victimization.

The union asserted that if the allegations are substantiated, the headmaster should face prosecution, asserting that no individual should be above the law due to their position or office. They further called for the strengthening of mechanisms for reporting sexual abuse within educational institutions to ensure that students can report misconduct without fear of repercussions, promoting accountability and safety in these environments.
