KP Governor Kundi announces amended welfare scheme for police officers, martyrs’ families

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi announced on Friday amendments to compensation schemes for police officers who have been martyred or injured while on duty. The new scheme increases compensation for families of martyred constables, head constables, assistant sub-inspectors, sub-inspectors and inspectors from Rs11m to Rs17m.

For families of martyred deputy superintendents of police and assistant superintendents of police, compensation increases from Rs16m to Rs25m. Compensation for martyred superintendents of police, senior superintendents of police, assistant inspector generals and grade 18 and 19 officers is increased from Rs21m to Rs30m. For families of martyred deputy inspector generals, inspector generals of police and grade 20 officers, compensation increases from Rs21m to Rs35m.

Injured police officers will receive significantly increased compensation, with permanent disability compensation raised tenfold from Rs500,000 to Rs5m, and severe injury compensation increased from Rs100,000 to Rs1.5m. Previously, families of martyred police officers were given plots; however, the new scheme provides cash in lieu of plots to give families more flexibility in using the funds.

The families of martyred constables and head constables will receive Rs18m in cash instead of a five-marla plot, while families of martyred ASIs, SIs and inspectors will receive Rs25m in cash instead of a seven-marla plot.

Governor Kundi emphasized that the new compensation packages aim to protect police officers and their families from terrorist attacks. If a police officer's spouse, children, parents or siblings are killed, the family will receive Rs5m or Rs3m in compensation. For police officers killed while off duty, families will receive Rs4m or Rs5m, and for SPs, SSPs and officers in grades 18 and 19, compensation is set at Rs7m.

Additionally, the KP government announced Rs1m to help fund the weddings of martyred officers' daughters and established a fund to support the education of their children, including studies abroad.

The governor also announced a salary increase for KP police officers, more than the expected, to make their pay packages more competitive compared to other provinces. Kundi directed officials to expedite recruitment in the KP police, which has 17,000 vacancies. He concluded by stating that the rifts between the federal center and the province have disappeared, and they must now work together for peace and prosperity in the province.
