Manchester United has fined defender Lisandro Martínez following his public criticism of the club's hierarchy in the aftermath of a Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid. The Argentina international, 28, expressed disappointment with the club's inability to strengthen the squad during the summer transfer window and suggested head coach Michael Carrick lacked resources.
He specifically criticized technical director Jason Wilcox and questioned the board's approach to assessing the team's struggles. Martínez held talks with Carrick, Wilcox, chief executive Omar Berrada and other senior figures, which were described as positive by sources. Following the meeting and a public apology on social media, the club imposed the fine as a formal punishment, though the exact amount remains undisclosed.
Martínez's current contract with United expires at the end of the 2026-27 season, with an option to extend it by a year. Despite the disciplinary issue being resolved, questions remain about his future at the club.
