CONNECT recap: Liquidity is tokenization’s next challenge, everyday stablecoins

At the Cointelegraph CONNECT event in Singapore, panelists discussed the challenges and opportunities in tokenized markets, everyday stablecoin payments, and onchain trading infrastructure. Alex Taaffe, chief revenue officer at GSR, noted that while liquidity is improving in pre-IPO stocks, commodities and global equities, demand for fully tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) has not kept pace with their growth.

Lingling Jiang, a partner at DWF Labs, agreed that fragmentation remains a challenge, especially when different issuers tokenize the same asset but create separate liquidity pools.

Mike Silagadze, founder and CEO of ether.fi, highlighted that while stablecoins have made cross-border transactions easier, widespread adoption depends on their integration into everyday financial services. Yvonne Chia, head of communications at USDD, emphasized the importance of user experience, calling for stablecoins to become as seamless as regular currency.

Regulatory hurdles were also addressed, with Ilya Podoynitsyn, co-founder and CEO of FinHarbor, pointing out the need for providers to adapt to varying rules across jurisdictions. Ashna Vaghela, chief customer officer at Mercuryo, suggested that stablecoin payments should be as seamless as popular payment apps like Apple Pay.

On the trading side, Austin Federa, co-founder of DoubleZero, noted that moving liquidity between blockchain networks is more challenging than in traditional markets, and that "fragmentation is not just an execution problem, it's like a data problem." Miguel Morel, founder and CEO of Arkham Intelligence, suggested that trading firms could use onchain data to assess counterparty risks, particularly in prediction markets.

This data could also aid exchanges in evaluating customer deposits and informing compliance decisions. However, Pulkit Gupta of Nomad Capital noted that liquidity challenges have made exits for crypto venture capital investors particularly difficult in recent months.
