Bystander who killed Oregon shooter identified as father of girls at elementary school

Kaylub Giamanco, a resident of Bend, Oregon, has been identified as the individual who shot and killed the 16-year-old gunman during a school shooting in Bend on Thursday. The family of Giamanco confirmed his identity on Friday, expressing gratitude for the support of first responders, school personnel, and the community. Giamanco, a father of two daughters who attend Silver Rail Elementary School, was reportedly driving near the school when he heard gunshots and decided to intervene.

His mother requested privacy and declined further media interviews, emphasizing that her son did not seek recognition but appreciated the outpouring of love and support. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised Giamanco's heroic actions during a news conference, acknowledging the emotional burden carried by the community member who intervened to prevent further loss of life.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz stated that officers arrived at the scene minutes after multiple 911 calls and that the attacker, John J Griffin II, was shot by a bystander inside the school. Five people, including the suspect and four others, were found deceased due to their injuries. Police are investigating the circumstances leading to the attack and maintaining a large presence at the school for several days.
