Beats Pill x Pokemon review: peak portable audio with a splash of Pikachu's charm
If you can find it, the Beats Pill featuring Pikachu and Mimikyu is a cute addition to anyone's collection, even if you already own the non-Pokemon one. Beats Pill x Pokemon review I've rolled my eyes at many brand collaborations, but one that never fails to attract my attention is Pokemon. Sure, it's the same Beats Pill under a coat of cute paint, but that's enough for the fans. The Beats Pill…
The Beats Pill featuring Pikachu and Mimikyu is a cute addition to any collection, even if you already own the non-Pokemon version. This collaboration between Beats and Pokemon is a welcome surprise that attracts fans, despite being essentially the same Beats Pill with a cute paint job. The speaker is dust and water resistant, rated IP67, and features a single USB-C port on the back. It also boasts a modern design, minimal on-device controls, and an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance.
The Pokemon model comes in gray to match the grayscale Mimikyu displayed on the speaker grille, with Pikachu rendered in full color next to it. The speaker includes some charms, including a lanyard with a charm featuring the Beats logo and a Pokeball, as well as raised electric sparks radiating from Pikachu on the speaker grille. The speaker has been tested in harsh environments like the lake or beach, and while there are concerns about the painted surface and lightning charms, the speaker still looks new.
The Beats Pill is more rounded and easier to hold than the previous Beats Pill+, and it also includes a lanyard. One main use case for the speaker has been taking it to the lake or beach, where it hasn't shown any damage or scratching. The speaker can be paired with a second one in Amplify Mode, which plays music from both speakers, or by enabling stereo mode after entering Amplify Mode.
The audio performance is impressive, with rich highs and powerful bass. In my testing, the speaker was loud and bass-heavy, and it was quite powerful at lower volumes.
The Beats Pill is a great portable speaker, especially considering its price point. It offers a unique experience with the Pokemon theme, but it's important to note that there's only one colorway available. The speaker can be paired with a second one, but managing the modes via button presses can be cumbersome compared to an app or the AirPlay interface. Despite this, the Beats Pill is an excellent choice for portable audio, especially for fans of Pokemon or those who enjoy Beats' signature sound.
