Anambra pegs youth age bracket at 18-35 years, set to begin enforcement January 1, 2027

The Anambra State Government has clarified that the age range of 18-35 years will be strictly enforced for youth development programs, youth organizations, and leadership positions, commencing on January 1, 2027. Dr. Nelson Omenugha, Special Adviser to the Governor on Youth Reformation, announced this in a press release. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that youth-focused initiatives reach the intended beneficiaries, foster fairness, enhance participation, and provide space for emerging leaders to cultivate their leadership skills.

Omenugha addressed all youth organizations, associations, and relevant institutions, instructing them to review and update their membership, leadership structures, and operational guidelines to achieve full compliance by the stipulated deadline. Starting from January 1, 2027, the Ministry of Youth Development and other government agencies will no longer acknowledge youth organizations that fail to adhere to the designated age bracket.

The directive aligns with the administration's youth reform agenda, led by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, which aims to cultivate a disciplined, productive, responsible, and values-driven generation of young people. While acknowledging the value of mentorship and intergenerational collaboration, the government maintains that positions and opportunities reserved for youths must be occupied by eligible individuals within the specified age range.

Omenugha clarified that the policy does not exclude citizens over 35 from contributing to youth development. Instead, it safeguards opportunities for eligible young people while encouraging experienced citizens to mentor, guide, and support the younger generation. He urged all stakeholders to utilize the transition period to make the required adjustments before the January 1, 2027, deadline.

The ultimate objective is to strengthen youth participation, promote accountability, and advance the vision of a New Onye Anambra through purposeful youth reform.
