Ghanaian entrepreneur Sir Sam Jonah has called upon Africa's youth to become job creators, rather than solely relying on government positions for employment. He made these remarks during the Methodist University Ghana International Conference 2026 on Thursday, October 15, 2026, which marked the institution's 25th anniversary. Jonah urged young people to view entrepreneurship as a respectable and achievable career choice, emphasizing that a nation of job-seekers will always remain impoverished.
He acknowledged the challenges many graduates face in finding employment after completing their education, as government jobs are often seen as the most stable and beneficial. Jonah advocated for African governments to take greater action in retaining their most talented graduates by creating environments conducive to building prosperous careers and businesses within their own countries.
He lamented the waste of resources spent educating bright young individuals only to have them idle or depart, noting that the greatest export from Africa is often its most skilled people. Jonah argued that a prosperous Africa must ensure its talent remains and thrives at home, not out of necessity, but because local opportunities present the best possibilities for success.
