Spain's national team coach, Luis de la Fuente, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the Catholic University of San Antonio of Murcia (UCAM). The ceremony, held at the university's Los Jerónimos church, marked a surprising distinction for the coach, who expressed his gratitude for being considered for the honor. De la Fuente, whose coaching philosophy centers on developing individuals before focusing on them as footballers, emphasized values such as generosity, solidarity, sacrifice, teamwork, resilience, and putting the group's interests above one's own.
He sees his role as a coach as one that helps people develop holistically, not just as athletes. The coach's address also highlighted his pride in leading Spain's national team, noting its unifying effect on the country. He reflected on recent Champions League results, praising both Barcelona's decisive win and Real Madrid's remarkable comeback, while acknowledging that every result is challenging.
De la Fuente's award from UCAM, a gesture he described as a source of pride and honor, stems from his deeply rooted Catholic faith and the shared values between him and the university.
