Shooter killed at Oregon elementary school; CNN, CBS report four dead in violence

On Thursday, October 15, a shooting occurred at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, leaving multiple victims injured, including children, before the perpetrator was killed, possibly by an armed onlooker, according to police. The assailant, reportedly a 16-year-old, fired shots at Silver Rail Elementary School, located in rural central Oregon.

Law enforcement officials received the first call around 1 pm, indicating that an unknown man had shot into a car at the school. Police officers who arrived at the scene found the suspect had been shot dead. Initial reports from CNN and CBS News stated that one adult and three children were killed in the violence, though it was unclear if the shooter was included in that death toll.

Later, CBS News reported that the shooter was indeed 16 years old. The Bend Police Department confirmed that at least two victims were transported to a hospital but did not disclose their condition. Police have not yet confirmed who shot the suspect. The school serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade, ages five to 11, with approximately 450 students and 40 staff members.

US Representative Maxine Dexter, a physician representing a part of Portland, called the shooting a "devastating day for Oregon," emphasizing that schools should be places of learning, friendship, and joy. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek also expressed her condolences, urging the community to support each other. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) chief Kash Patel stated that federal agents were on the scene assisting local partners in the investigation and that the FBI would provide all necessary resources.
