School roof collapse in Pakistan's Peshawar kills at least 27 students, one teacher

A school roof collapse in Pakistan's Peshawar city has left at least 27 students, aged under 13, dead, along with one teacher, according to officials. Over 40 injured individuals, including the deceased and others, were taken to Lady Reading Hospital for treatment. Rescue efforts were underway to clear the rubble and locate additional survivors.

District emergency officer Iftikhar Khan stated that at least 45 children have been rescued so far, but acknowledged the possibility of more victims still trapped under the debris. The cause of the disaster remains unknown at this time. Local media reports indicate that such incidents are becoming more common across Pakistan due to substandard construction and inadequate maintenance practices.

In July, three girls were killed when the outer wall of a government school collapsed in Umerkot. The same month, a child died and five were injured in Lahore when the roof of an unfinished private school fell. One month prior, 14 children lost their lives in a similar tragedy at a private tutoring facility in Lahore, following another incident in Dera Ghazi Khan.
