Reported shooting at Oregon elementary school prompts police response

On Thursday, a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, left at least two individuals hospitalized and the attacker dead, authorities reported. Sheila Miller, a spokesperson for the Bend police department, informed a media briefing that children were among the victims, though the exact number of those injured was not yet known.

The incident occurred around 12:59 pm when police received a call about a gunshot being fired into a car outside the school. Within minutes, additional emergency calls were made from inside the school. The suspect was subsequently shot, though it was unclear whether he was killed by police or a bystander. Miller indicated that he had fallen inside the school shortly after the arrival of law enforcement.

The conditions of the injured individuals were not immediately disclosed. The city and police department did not respond to requests for comment at the time. Silver Rail Elementary, under lockdown, was conducting a room-by-room search and evacuation of all individuals present, stating it was a devastating event they never wished to experience in Bend.

The school, located approximately 100 miles southeast of Portland, had 459 enrolled students as of the previous year, serving grades from kindergarten through fifth grade.
