Ledger’s new hardware wallet is an Android phone without the phone

Ledger, a crypto-focused hardware company, has unveiled its newest product, the Atom, an Android-based gadget designed to complement smartphones rather than replace them. This launch comes at a challenging juncture for Ledger, following a supply chain tampering incident that led to the suspension of hardware sales in Southeast Asia and Germany, with potential losses exceeding $86 million.
Unlike traditional Ledger hardware wallets, the Atom is essentially an Android phone with limited eSIM capabilities for data-only use. It operates on both Android OS and a secure Ledger OS, enabling secure crypto transactions within its secure element chip. Users can also communicate via encrypted messages using standard Android messaging apps, with decryption performed within Ledger OS.
Ledger has incorporated AI agents into the Atom, enabling financial tasks to be managed without granting full access to digital wallets. Physical approval is required for completing transactions. However, the Atom is intentionally limited in certain aspects, such as a 60Hz 6.77-inch OLED display, a Qualcomm Dragonwing chip, and a single rear camera with a 4,000mAh battery. It boasts a five-year Android OS update cycle and seven years of spare parts support, including a user-replaceable battery.
A physical privacy switch is included to cut power to the camera and microphone at the circuit level. The device's launch coincides with Ledger's supply chain incident, involving an unauthorized hardware implant that potentially compromised users' 24-word recovery phrases and transmitted them using an eSIM. Ledger has since suspended sales in affected regions and claims that the Atom's design incorporates physical anti-tampering measures to prevent such incidents.
The Atom will be available for pre-order from summer 2027, with a refundable $100 deposit securing a Founder's Edition device priced at $849. Following launch, the price will increase to $899.
