EXTREME WEATHER : Agriculture Minister sounds “super El Niño” warning bell and calls for water restrictions
Minister Willie Aucamp wants to see proactive measures in place to deal with the unfolding El Niño
Agriculture Minister Willie Aucamp has issued a warning about an impending "super El Niño" event that could severely impact South Africa's farming sector and economy. He urges farmers to avoid complacency despite recent rain in September, cautioning that the extreme event typically gains traction in summer. Aucamp predicts a hot and dry period from November to January and warns of the need for proactive water restrictions to avoid dire consequences.
He advises farmers to focus on their most fertile land and reduce herd numbers to prevent overgrazing, estimating that 70% of the national cattle herd has already been vaccinated against foot-and-mouth disease.
