Cybersecurity expert David Gyedu has warned the public against using their main Visa cards for online transactions. He suggests requesting a separate prepaid or internet banking card to minimize the risk of financial losses due to fintech fraud. Speaking on the GTV Breakfast show, Gyedu explained that using a separate card for online payments could safeguard customers’ primary bank accounts in case of a data breach or cyberattack.
"Gyedu advised customers to request a prepaid card or internet banking card from their banks and transfer funds from their main accounts to the separate cards for online transactions," the source states. This approach would limit potential losses if the cards were hacked or misused.
Gyedu recounted instances where people used their primary bank cards for online advertisements and later found thousands of Ghana cedis had been withdrawn from their accounts. He also cautioned ATM users to ensure they properly close the ATM session before leaving, especially in situations where unauthorized access to transactions is a concern.
He urged fintech fraud victims, including those affected by mobile money scams and SIM-swap attacks, to report incidents to the Cyber Security Authority, the police, the financial institution or digital platform involved, and reputable private cybersecurity organizations.
