AMA demolishes unauthorised pigsty obstructing Agbogbloshie waste evacuation exercise

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) recently demolished an unauthorized pigsty at Agbogbloshie, which was impeding the National Emergency Waste Evacuation Exercise. The demolition was a response to the pigsty's operators who failed to comply with a final warning issued on October 8, 2026. The AMA's efforts aim to clear the area for heavy machinery and personnel involved in removing accumulated waste, as part of their initiative to restore environmental cleanliness.

The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, stated that the pigsty was built without the necessary permit or approval, in violation of the Assembly's by-laws for animal-rearing within the metropolis. He highlighted the AMA's Control of Animals By-law, 2017, which prohibits the keeping of certain animals without a permit, as these regulations are designed to control livestock, protect public health, prevent environmental nuisances, and ensure sanitary living conditions.

The Mayor emphasized the importance of obtaining permits for livestock farming or other commercial activities and operating only in approved locations. He also warned against the construction of unauthorized structures or activities that obstruct public access, disrupt sanitation operations, or hinder development interventions. The AMA remains committed to enforcing its by-laws and supporting the waste evacuation exercise to improve public health and promote orderliness in the metropolis.
