War horse Gladatorian gets thumbs up for Summer Cup
Betting favourite Errol Flynn has clinched the No 16 slot.
Gladatorian, a seven-year-old racehorse reminiscent of ancient Roman gladiators, has once again proven his mettle on the track. In the Joburg Spring Challenge at Turffontein, he covered 600 kays from his home in Durban, giving local competitors a thorough lesson in their maiden race of the season. This victory marked his 12th win in 35 starts, with just 11 of those finishes not earning prize money.
With a top weight carry of 60kg and a merit rating of 127, Gladatorian is poised to make a strong showing in the Betway Summer Cup, scheduled for November 28th at Turffontein. Trained by Stuart Ferrie, the gelding will carry the top weight, despite some suspicions about his stamina for the 2000m marathon. Current bookmakers have placed him at 17.00 odds for the race's win, while Errol Flynn, another top contender, is at 7.50.
Among the surprises, Soma's other runners, Rule By Force and Jimmy Don, as well as Durban-based Madison Valley, have been excluded from the top 20.
