People Taking Gray Market Peptides Say They’re Causing Bizarre Medical Issues

In a growing trend, people are turning to gray market peptides, unregulated substances, for addressing a wide array of health issues. The Food and Drug Administration's head recently made headlines for his use of DMT while driving, highlighting the potential dangers of these substances. A recent KFF Health News investigation uncovered the story of Dylan Meetze, a weightlifter who purchased BPC-157, a synthetic peptide derived from 15 amino acids, from a company called Researchem.

Meetze, hoping to boost his weightlifting performance, applied BPC-157 up his nose for just three days. However, the side effects were severe, causing him to feel as though he was underwater and making everyday tasks challenging. After discontinuing BPC-157 use, Meetze endured months of fatigue, anxiety, and spasms in his eyes and muscles.

Another user, Dominik E, reported similar side effects after combining BPC-157 with TB-4, a naturally occurring protein. E experienced severe eye pain, numbness on his left face, and debilitating migraines for two months. Despite the popularity of peptides, few undergo clinical trials, leaving many unregulated peptides with little to no robust studies examining their impact on human health.

As Peter Lurie, a former FDA associate commissioner, told KFF Health News, "You’ve got to show clinical benefit in humans: does it work?" The allure of these unregulated substances remains strong, but the risks are significant.
