Netflix Film VP Doug Belgrad Out as Part of Layoffs

Netflix Film Vice President Doug Belgrad has been let go as part of the company's recent round of layoffs, according to TheWrap's sources. Belgrad, who worked closely with Netflix Film head Dan Lin, was one of Lin's earliest hires when he took on the role after Scott Stuber. Netflix chose not to comment on the matter. Prior to joining Netflix in 2024, Belgrad held key positions at Sony Pictures, including President of Production, President of Columbia Pictures, and President of Sony Motion Picture Group.

On Wednesday, Netflix announced it had laid off around 1,000 employees, which amounts to about 6% of its workforce. The company's co-CEOs, Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters, informed staff via email that the majority of these cuts were in the product, tech, legal, and human-resources teams. Sarandos and Peters emphasized that Netflix remains on track to meet its full-year forecast and will continue investing in high-impact areas to enhance their service and drive growth and innovation.

Despite recent challenges with growth, Netflix has had a successful year when it comes to original films. The streamer has released genre movies like "The Rip," "Apex," and "War Machine," which performed well with subscribers under the guidance of VP Ori Marmur, who oversees the genre unit under Lin. Netflix also plans to expand into the theatrical space, with movies such as David Fincher's "The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth" debuting in IMAX theaters in November and Greta Gerwig's "Narnia: The Magician's Nephew" receiving both a global theatrical rollout and a 45-day theatrical window before its streaming release in February.
