*Commends Tinubu for sending bill to parliament Alex Enumah in Abuja Abuja The National Assembly has been called upon to give speedy and thorough consideration to the Administration of Criminal

The Centre for Socio-Legal Studies (CSLS) has urged the National Assembly to swiftly and comprehensively review the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) Amendment Bill, currently under consideration. The call also extends to states and other entities to ensure the implementation of the National Minimum Standards (NMS) for improved justice delivery in Nigeria.

CSLS President, Professor Yemi Akinseye-George, highlighted the bill's potential benefits for Nigeria's justice sector. The CSLS project, funded by the European Union and supported by International IDEA, aimed to bridge the gap between Nigeria's criminal justice laws and their practical application. Over the project's duration, CSLS collaborated with criminal justice institutions in seven focal states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to apply NMS standards in daily practice.

Key outcomes included law reform, collaboration leading to the final draft of the ACJA Amendment Bill, and capacity building through training sessions for over 1,700 justice-sector actors. CSLS also conducted inspection visits to various justice sector entities to assess compliance and identify gaps. The project's End-of-Project Report detailed the impact of the NMS on suspects, defendants, victims, and justice sector officials.

CSLS expressed gratitude to the European Union for funding the project, International IDEA for its partnership, and numerous other stakeholders for their support.
