Welcome to Windvale

The other weekend I was a little bored, so I started messing about on my phone, having Copilot create an online D&D system called Windvale. It went well; I could log in as the dungeon master, create the world, create items, NPCs, skills, and much more. Whilst players could log in and play in the world. I swapped from my phone to the laptop, logged in as the dungeon master, then logged in as a…

During a recent idle moment, I decided to experiment with my phone by instructing Copilot to generate a new online D&D system named Windvale. The experience proved fruitful; I could access the game as the dungeon master, construct the realm, generate items, non-player characters, skills, and more. I alternated between my phone and laptop, assuming the role of the dungeon master, subsequently assuming the positions of multiple players using incognito mode and a different device.

As I ran out of devices, I resorted to instructing ChatGPT to create an account and join the game, which it accomplished. Consequently, I recruited additional AI participants, ultimately pausing my involvement and allowing the AI players to govern themselves while I concentrated on the dungeon master role, addressing any glitches they encountered.

Initially, the AI players cooperated as a single party, collaborating to progress through the game world. However, the situation took an unexpected turn when one of the AI characters ceased healing others, began looting items without sharing, and displayed behavior reminiscent of many online multiplayer game players I have encountered.

In an effort to rectify the situation, I introduced a party chat feature, observing a group of AI characters criticizing another AI for its disruptive actions, yet the problematic AI remained unrepentant and content with the discord it had caused among its fellow players. The outcome of this intriguing experiment remains uncertain, but it certainly proved to be an entertaining endeavor.

A single ChatGPT conversation, roughly 20 to 50 queries, consumes about half a liter of water. That's the number that stopped me. Not the electricity, not the carbon, not the GPU shortage. The water.

  • AI industry consumes alarming amounts of water and energy.
  • Data centers projected to double global electricity use by 2026.
  • Liquid immersion and phase-change cooling show promise for sustainable AI.
