Trump asks Greece ambassador to resign amid ethics scandal

US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle has been asked to resign by the White House following numerous reports of alleged misconduct, marking a sudden downfall for a prominent figure closely tied to President Donald Trump’s family. In a brief statement on Tuesday, press secretary Katie Zacharia confirmed the White House's request for Guilfoyle's resignation, expressing gratitude for her contributions to the administration.

When questioned about the decision, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Guilfoyle's actions, stating that he had not personally spoken with her. In a subsequent X post, Guilfoyle acknowledged the possibility of her resignation while denying the allegations against her, vowing to defend her reputation. The allegations include seeking financial compensation for providing access to administration figures, accepting gifts, and involving a lobbyist for a Greek construction company in official meetings.

Guilfoyle's lawyers deny the accusations, stating that any travel reports were misleading and that she followed government gift and reporting guidelines. Despite her reluctance to resign on Sunday, administration officials grew increasingly uncomfortable with the reports, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio was particularly eager for her departure.

Guilfoyle, who had been President Trump's daughter-in-law until their separation, was appointed ambassador to Greece in September 2025. The White House is reportedly considering her dismissal, with President Trump acknowledging the need to address the situation during his departure from the White House.
