The controversy began after the WSJ published screenshots of text messages allegedly showing Guilfoyle's demands.

President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed their displeasure over her conduct. Although Rubio initially defended her, he later criticized journalists for focusing on the allegations, claiming he needed to learn more before commenting. The State Department's investigator general may investigate the matter, though this has not been confirmed.

Democrats in Congress have called for investigations as well. Guilfoyle, known for her connections to energy companies and luxury lifestyle, faced criticism for her behavior, including threats against Greek democracy and favoring shady deals with Greek officials. The final straw was the media offensive led by Republican donor Eric Deters, who alleged a quid pro quo arrangement with Guilfoyle.
