NHAI takes up tree plantation drive along ECR between Mamallapuram and Marakkanam

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated a tree plantation drive along the East Coast Road (ECR) between Mamallapuram and Marakkanam as part of a special campaign under Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS)-2026. The drive was launched by Pankaj Asati, Regional Officer, Chennai, along with students from Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain Arts and Science College.

The team planted saplings near Mamallapuram, with the Forest Department committed to planting an additional 4,000 saplings. This project aims to replace the 7,500 trees that were removed to make way for the four-laning project of the ECR, which is expected to be completed by March 2027. The construction of the project, amounting to around ₹3,000 crore, has already reached 75% completion, covering a length of 62 km.

Upon completion, the ECR will have eight lanes in total, with two service lanes on either side designated for local traffic.
