MCMC probes viral video over allegedly misleading Budget 2027 tax claims

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating a viral video circulating on social media for allegedly containing false and misleading claims about the Sales and Service Tax (SST) and income tax relief in the 2027 Budget. The MCMC received complaints from the public regarding the video, which, if believed, could lead to confusion about national taxation policies and influence people's financial decisions based on incorrect information.

The MCMC has referred the matter to the Ministry of Finance for assessment, including evaluating the video's content and its dissemination context. If violations of laws, such as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, are found, further action may be taken. The MCMC stresses that freedom of speech should be exercised responsibly and not used to spread false information that could harm the public interest.
