Bonnie Garmus on Writing a Coming-of-Age Novel of Poets and Poetry

Elizabeth Zott's novel Lessons in Chemistry captivated readers with its portrayal of the feisty 1960s-era chemist and her transformation into a TV cooking sensation. Garmus' follow-up, Batter Gray, introduces an aspiring poet from Yuba City, California, who finds himself entangled in a family drama within the vibrant 1980s New York City poetry scene.

Inspired by her high school English teacher who instilled a daily ritual of reading poems, Garmus pondered how to craft a story about someone who instinctively discerns poetry's value. Initially envisioning a protagonist who would navigate the battle between originality and conformity, Garmus ultimately created a twenty-five-year-old Batter Gray, who grapples with self-doubt, impulsive actions, and the search for his true identity.

Parents John and Rainey Gray play crucial roles in shaping Batter's character. Both are in the humanities, aware that their chosen careers do not guarantee financial security. John's past mistakes loom over him, while Rainey, mourning the loss of Batter's brother, shares stories of her courageous dog Batter, emphasizing the importance of nerve and resilience. Ultimately, Rainey's words guide Batter, while his father's confession prompts him to take action.

The eccentric Peck family, founded by twin brothers Declonius and Salton, adds a unique dimension to the narrative. These twins engage Batter in their schemes, creating a web of intrigue around the young poet. Garmus' meticulous research into twin relationships, coupled with interviews and conversations with twin therapists, provided a well-rounded foundation for the complex dynamics within this peculiar family.
