1 in 12 Ocean Shipments Has a Blank Carrier ETA

A recent analysis by Tradlinx, a supply chain data platform based in South Korea, has revealed that approximately one in twelve ocean shipments is affected by inaccurate or missing carrier ETAs. The study examined over 500,000 shipments annually and found that carriers left the ETA blank in 8.43% of cases, totaling 42,832 instances.
The majority of these gaps, 6.09%, occurred at the transshipment port, where cargo was waiting. Missing ETAs also affected 1.21% of transshipment cargo destined for final destinations and 1.13% of direct shipments. When compared to actual arrival times, carrier ETAs were found to be off by an average of 15.4 hours. However, in the most severe cases where carrier ETAs missed arrival by 48 hours or more, the average error increased to 90.0 hours.
Tradlinx highlighted that approximately 87% of these gaps occurred at transshipment ports, where planners require the most visibility. The missing ETAs often go unnoticed, leading to delays in customer updates and inefficient planning of trucking and warehouse operations. The analysis also demonstrated that prediction models, like Tradlinx's AI-ETA, can effectively fill these gaps.
When the carrier ETA was missing, the AI model provided an estimate, resulting in an average error 31.4% lower than that of carrier ETAs, at 10.6 hours versus 15.4 hours.
