Outdated Windows PCs Could Lose Access To Windows Update In 2027

Microsoft has issued a warning to those using older versions of Windows, stating that their computers may lose access to crucial updates by 2027. This is due to the expiration of digital certificates used by Windows Update, which establishes secure connections between devices and the update servers. Without updated certificates, these devices won't be able to receive any further updates, leaving them exposed to potential security threats.

Microsoft has highlighted two key dates to remember: May 17, 2027, and June 19, 2027. The first applies to Windows 10 Enterprise 2019 LTSC, Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server 2016, while the second concerns Windows 11, Windows Server 2025, Windows Server 2022, and other in-support versions of Windows 10. There's no need for users to take any additional steps to obtain the new certificates, as they are included in monthly security updates.

Users who keep up with patches should be prepared, as devices running Windows 11 25H2 and later require no action on their part. However, Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025 users need the September 2025 security update or later, while other versions need at least the July 2026 security update. Windows 10 devices not enrolled in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program face the greatest risk, as they won't receive updates at all since the operating system reached its end of life last year.

However, the ESU program remains open until October 2027, giving users ample time to sign up and download the necessary updates before the June deadline. Unsupported Windows versions without this option will have to upgrade their systems.
