Chery Malaysia recalls Omoda 5 again over rear axle issue: How to check if you’re affected

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 12 — The Malaysian recall process for the pre-facelift (FL) version of the Omoda 5 SUV has begun, marking the second major recall for the vehicle. The reason for this recall is the same as the previous one: a problem with the rear axle. Chery Malaysia announced the recall on their social media platforms shortly after the Road Transport Department (JPJ) suspended Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) for the Omoda 5 following a recent incident in Johor where the SUV's rear axle detached while in motion. JPJ instructed Chery to identify and recall all units at risk.

Chery stated that all affected vehicles will undergo comprehensive inspections, and any necessary follow-up actions, including component replacements, will be provided at no cost. Omoda 5 was initially launched in July 2023 and was later replaced by the Chery 05 in September of the same year. The Chery 05 features a multi-link rear suspension system, unlike the torsion beam setup found in the Omoda 5.

The electric Omoda E5 also employs multi-link suspension at the rear. All three Chery models are manufactured (CKD) at Inokom's facility in Kulim, Kedah.

To determine if your Omoda 5 is affected by the recall, you can visit Chery's Product Update page and input your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). If your Omoda 5 is part of the recall campaign, contact Chery for further arrangements. The VIN can be located in four different areas within the car, such as on the label in the top left of the instrument cluster through the front windscreen or on the hood.

You can also find it stamped under the driver's seat or at the back door. Should you have any questions, reach out to the Chery Careline at 03 – 9388 0888.
