Andrea Stella praises Lando Norris for reaction to Singapore GP sprint clash

McLaren Formula 1 boss Andrea Stella commended Lando Norris for his reaction following a clash with team-mate Oscar Piastri during the Singapore GP sprint race. The incident occurred when Norris opportunistically latched onto the inside of Turn 5, resulting in both cars colliding at the apex. This led to Piastri's retirement while Norris dropped to eighth place.

However, Piastri's teammate avoided any penalties as the stewards deemed both drivers equally responsible. Despite the team's frustration, the event took a positive turn when Norris finished fourth on Sunday and offered assistance to Piastri in his late attack on Hamilton for fifth.

Stella emphasized the importance of unity within the team, stating that he expects the drivers to prioritize the team's interests above their own. The McLaren hierarchy was not pleased with the situation, but Norris' change in attitude demonstrated a more collaborative mindset. This shift in perspective was evident initially when Norris claimed he had the right to make the move, but later admitted that he should never have attempted the overtake. Piastri also agreed that the incident didn't need to happen but has since moved on.

Stella's satisfaction stemmed from the rapid change in Norris and Piastri's attitudes, as they aligned themselves with the team's vision. The team principal highlighted the need for ongoing discussions among all stakeholders, including the team and drivers, to maintain a harmonious working relationship. Stella stressed the importance of embracing the team's interests as superior to individual desires, emphasizing that this mindset is crucial for the team's success.
