NatureQuest AI: Less Screen, More Sky — A Local Gemma-Powered Outdoor Companion
This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass . What I Built What if the best AI application was the one that encouraged you to close your laptop? We spend so much time building technology that keeps people engaged, clicking, scrolling, and staring at screens. For Hacktoberfest 2026, I wanted to explore the opposite idea: Could AI encourage us to step…
NatureQuest AI is an open-source AI-powered outdoor companion that encourages users to step away from screens and reconnect with nature. Developed for Hacktoberfest 2026, this application runs locally using Google's open-weight Gemma 3 model, which generates personalized outdoor activities based on user preferences. By providing brief, meaningful adventures, NatureQuest aims to inspire curiosity and awareness of one's surroundings.
The application consists of four main features: AI-powered outdoor adventures, nature observations, a personal field journal, and offline-friendly exploration. Users select an environment, mood, and available time, after which the model generates three tailored activities, such as observing leaf shapes or discovering natural patterns.
After completing an adventure, users can upload a photo for the AI to analyze and provide descriptions, observations, suggestions, uncertainty explanations, and safety guidance for observing nature responsibly.
A personal field journal allows users to save their completed activities, photos, observations, and notes locally using browser IndexedDB storage. The journal can be revisited, edited, or exported as JSON. When offline, NatureQuest offers curated activities and retains prior journal entries without requiring AI inference. Despite its small footprint, NatureQuest strives to create a meaningful, offline-first experience that fosters genuine outdoor curiosity.
