Infrastructural Transformation of Lagos Int’l Airport

Chinedu Eze The ongoing infrastructural transformation at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, is giving the country’s major gateway a new look with international standard. Anyone who last

The ongoing renovation and expansion of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos have drastically transformed the once familiar international wing of the airport. The old Terminal 1, which was completely destroyed in February 2026, has been dismantled and a complete overhaul is underway. The process includes reconstruction of structural components, installation of a new glass façade with advanced Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, and high-tech baggage handling facilities.

To ensure uninterrupted flight operations during Terminal 1's closure, a temporary departure hall with 20 check-in counters has been set up. Simultaneously, Terminal 2 is being redesigned and expanded to create a unified aviation complex with Terminal 1. This expansion is expected to boost the airport's annual passenger capacity to 17.6 million, approximately 7,040 passengers per hour.

The project also includes the installation of upgraded electrical/mechanical systems, automated e-passport gates, and larger aircraft aprons.

Besides enhancing passenger experience, the transformation aims to tackle traffic congestion around the airport. New access and ring roads, a 14.6 km perimeter security system, and runway lighting upgrades are part of the plan to create a state-of-the-art facility comparable to international airports. The China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) is spearheading this massive transformation.

Plans for Terminal 2's expansion are in place to accommodate larger aircraft by utilizing currently underutilised avio-bridges. This expansion is necessary to handle the growing passenger traffic. The Federal Government of Nigeria has designated the Dominion Aviation Centre, Evergreen Apples Nigeria (EAN), and Caverton Helicopters hangars for relocation or demolition to make way for the ramp expansion of the new terminal.

FAAN's Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the Terminal 2 expansion and anticipation for the completion of the upper terminal level before the December passenger surge. She also highlighted the need for public patience amid vehicular disruptions and commended the Honorable Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, for his support and investment in the aviation sector.

Kuku further revealed plans for a light rail project connecting the airport to Marina, Lagos, and other airport areas.
