On October 10, World Mental Health Day, Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences (SAIMS) in Indore will provide free mental health screening using advanced nuclear medicine technology, marking Madhya Pradesh's first of its kind initiative. Founder chairman Dr Vinod Bhandari explained that the advanced imaging would aid doctors in accurately identifying neurological conditions and planning treatments.
The institute generates the necessary isotope, F-18 DOPA (Fluorodopa F-18), at its nuclear medicine facility in Ujjain, which no other private medical college in the state possesses. Dr Anurag Jain, director of the nuclear medicine department, elaborated that the F-18 DOPA PET-CT scan assesses dopamine-related nerve activity and amino acid metabolism in tumors and endocrine tissues, enabling evaluation of Parkinsonian syndromes, brain tumors, and neuroendocrine tumors.
This technology also holds potential in assessing selected psychiatric conditions like psychosis, schizophrenia, and mood disorders. Neurosciences department heads Dr Rahul Jain and Dr Raghavan Iyengar emphasized that the scan offers additional diagnostic information, helps differentiate similar conditions, detects recurrence, and guides treatment planning. The initiative aims to enhance diagnostic precision and ensure timely, appropriate patient care.
