I saw education as only ticket out of poverty — LASU first-class graduate

Ayomide Olubunmi, a first-class graduate from the Department of Communication and Media Studies at Lagos State University, shares her inspiring journey from a difficult childhood to academic success. Growing up in a slum, Ayomide hawked sachet water and helped her single mother with various jobs to make ends meet. She lost her father when she was just five months old, which left a profound impact on her life.

Education became her ticket out of poverty and a means to change her circumstances. She explains that higher education exposed her to new perspectives, experiences, and people who helped her envision what was possible beyond her immediate environment. Despite facing significant financial challenges, including being part of the less favored "Stream Two" category during her university application process, Ayomide persevered and secured her admission to LASU.

Her uncle, whom she did not know, emerged as a crucial support system. Unbeknownst to her, her uncle lived in Germany and decided to sponsor her education. This unexpected act of kindness transformed Ayomide's life and allowed her to pursue her dreams. She applied for a scholarship as well, acknowledging the importance of exploring all available resources to further her education.

Through her journey, Ayomide emphasizes the transformative power of education and the role it played in shaping her mindset, aspirations, and achievements. She encourages others from similar backgrounds to pursue higher education and seize opportunities that can help them break free from their circumstances.
