San Miguel GS at Alamo – Santa Elena (7 October 2026)

It had been a few years since San Miguel Golf Society (SMGS) last played Alamo, now referred to as Santa Elena, so it was time to reconnect with the course. Would the familiarity of the course bring back fond memories, or would it challenge the golfers anew? Rain had fallen recently, but the course exhibited little evidence of it. The course presented a longer and more challenging layout than what the players were accustomed to, and the scores reflected that.

Returning after a gap had its benefits, though. The returnees could approach troublesome holes with renewed optimism, putting past disasters out of their minds for the moment. Golfers possessed a remarkable memory when it suited them! Today, 40 golfers competed, consisting of 36 members and four guests, eager to renew acquaintances and see if the course remembered them.

The top scorers of the day were Greame Millington (37 points, with a best score), Denis Ryan (32 points), and Dave Blinston (35 points). Noteworthy achievements included two perfect rounds by Steve Packer and Guy Wade Palmer, and Dave Rowe (5th) and Steve Packer (12th) were nearest the pins. Ken West claimed the football card, while Mick Pryke won the coveted "McBride Bottle."

Guests were delighted with their performance, with Pat Cunningham leading the way with 30 points. The golfers basked in the glory of a well-presented ceremony on the terrace, where stories of triumph and mishap were shared over drinks. Special thanks went to Daniel and Johanna from the Pro Shop for their outstanding service.

The weather turned quickly, with thunder rumbling and a sudden downpour affecting the final groups. SMGS remained steadfast in its commitment to providing top-notch service, with special thanks to the Pro Shop staff. For all your golf travel needs, SMGS proudly supports Michaela Schmidt at www.golf-hotspots.com. The next event on the horizon is the Trophy Presentation, following the game at La Serena.

The winners will be honored, with the main picture featuring Captain Paul Lambert, his fourball (Will Hammond, Denis Ryan, and Sandra Dibble), and the following members: Paul Lambert (Captain), Guy Wade Palmer (Twos), Darren Strugnell, Mick Pryke (President & McBride Bottle), Denis Ryan (Silver 1st), Richard Cleary (Bronze 4th), and Steve Packer (NTP & Twos).
