The Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to Canadian author Anne Carson for her innovative contributions to contemporary literature. The prestigious recognition was announced by the Swedish Academy in Stockholm on Thursday. Last year, Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai received the literature Nobel for his surreal and darkly humorous novels that convey the power of art in the face of "apocalyptic terror".
Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson is a poet, translator, and academic whose work blends classical literature, poetry, and contemporary writing. Much of her career has been dedicated to exploring the relationship between words, their origins, and the search for new meanings. Carson's translations include Sappho's fragments in If Not, Winter (2002), as well as works by Sophocles, Euripides, and others.
Her influential 1986 work, Eros the Bittersweet, explored Eros as a force driven by pain and sweetness, establishing a central approach to her writing. Notable among her works are The Glass Essay (1995), Autobiography of Red (1998), The Beauty of the Husband (2001), and Nox (2010). Carson's later works, including Float (2016) and Wrong Norma (2024), continue to challenge conventional literary forms through her collaborations across literature, visual art, theatre, and opera.
The Nobel Prize in Literature is accompanied by a prize of 12 million Swedish kronor, or approximately $1.2 million, awarded to an individual, group, or organization.
