Aegean, Ryanair and Austrian ranked highest in new 10-year European Airline Safety Index

In its newly-released European Airline Safety Index, AirAdvisor has ranked the top 20 carriers across a decade’s worth of research data.

Aegean Airlines, Ryanair, and Austrian Airlines have topped a new 10-year European Airline Safety Index compiled by AirAdvisor. The index, which evaluates 20 major European airlines based on flight volumes reported by EUROCONTROL in 2025, ranks Aegean highest with a score of 89 out of 100. Ryanair and Austrian Airlines follow closely with scores of 86 and 85.5 respectively.

All three airlines scored perfectly in the safety record category and performed well in operational safety, fleet age, and financial stability. Low-cost carriers, including Ryanair, Norwegian, and SunExpress, dominated the top five positions, averaging a score of 79.2 out of 100, compared to 82.8 for mainline carriers. Despite this, the study found no significant difference in accident records between low-cost and mainline airlines.

AirAdvisor CEO Anton Radchenko noted that the price of a ticket does not necessarily indicate the safety level of an airline.
