2027: ‘You will be monitored’ – CJN issues warning to election tribunal judges

Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has cautioned judges who will preside over the 2027 election petition tribunals to maintain political neutrality. She made the statement on Wednesday while inaugurating the 2026/2027 legal year of the National Industrial Court in Abuja. Kekere-Ekun emphasized that judges serving on the Industrial Court might be called to serve on election tribunals according to the law governing the 2027 elections, and they must demonstrate strict impartiality.

She highlighted that election cases are politically charged and garner significant public scrutiny, urging judges to be mindful of their behavior, associations, and public appearances. Kekere-Ekun cautioned that judges on tribunal service will be under close scrutiny as Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections. "You will be monitored.

As we approach another electoral season, these responsibilities assume even greater importance," she stressed.
