Unit established to follow up on NPA referrals: SIU

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has established a dedicated unit to investigate the success rates of its referrals to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), according to a recent presentation to Parliament’s Justice and Constitutional Development Portfolio Committee. The SIU’s 2025/2026 Annual Report revealed that there were over 700 referrals made to the NPA this year alone.

However, obtaining feedback on the prosecution outcomes has proven challenging for the SIU. Committee Chair Xola Nqola emphasized the importance of addressing this issue, stating that without the NPA, Hawks, and SAPS acting on referrals, the SIU’s efforts would be rendered ineffective. Nqola pledged that the committee would follow up with the NPA to ensure that referrals are acted upon appropriately.
