Lack of basic learning materials fueling absenteeism in Sekyere South basic schools – Education Directorate

The Sekyere South Education Directorate has expressed worry about a rise in student absenteeism at basic schools, especially in the Wiamoase area. This issue is partially attributed to families' inability to furnish pupils with necessary learning materials. Among these items are school uniforms, sandals, bags, and exercise books.

Andrew Osei Twumasi, the Deputy Director responsible for Supervision and Monitoring in the Sekyere South Education Directorate, shared this information with Adom News. The problem was highlighted during a donation event by the Humanity Heavens Foundation, which provided educational materials to pupils in Wiamoase to help alleviate the financial burden on parents and promote regular school attendance.

Twumasi pointed out that the lack of basic school supplies is often cited as a reason for students missing school. "When you ask pupils why they didn't go to school, they usually mention something like 'I don't have a school uniform, bag, sandals, or exercise books,'" he said. This shortage of essential items is a significant barrier to education in the region.

The Directorate is urging non-governmental organizations, philanthropists, and other individuals to assist schools in the district with the necessary educational materials. The Humanity Heavens Foundation donated school bags, exercise books, pens, pencils, and mathematical sets to pupils in the area. The donation's purpose was to motivate students and prevent a lack of basic learning materials from keeping them away from school.

Madam Emelia Frimpong, the President of the Humanity Heavens Foundation, explained that the organization's evaluation showed many parents find it difficult to provide essential learning materials, particularly when schools resume. "We stepped in to ease this burden and ensure these young learners don't miss out on quality education because of a lack of supplies," she stated.

The Foundation has also called on other NGOs, corporate entities, and philanthropists to support pupils in Wiamoase and other communities within the Sekyere South District.
