India’s Additive Manufacturing Revolution Gains Momentum As NSAM 2.0 Expands 3D Printing Across Space, Defence And Healthcare

India is rapidly becoming a key player in the digital revolution through Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing technology, which uses digital files to control the manufacturing process, according to a government factsheet. The National Strategy for Additive Manufacturing (NSAM) was introduced in 2022 to foster India's AM ecosystem.

So far, NSAM has trained over 154,000 individuals and supported 56 AM startups, aiming to create a larger market than its predecessor. Beyond industrial applications, AM is poised to transform healthcare by enabling personalized medical devices and implants, reducing imports and strengthening domestic manufacturing. The technology has already been utilized by the Indian Army to create a two-story, AM-printed dwelling unit in Ahmedabad, and is being adopted for rapid, disaster-resilient construction.

With global AM machines market projected to reach $149 billion by 2035, India stands to benefit significantly from this emerging technology.
