Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh: Chief Minister Mohan Yadav released two cheetahs in the Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve on Wednesday, expanding the cheetah conservation project to the third habitat in the state. This marks a significant milestone in wildlife conservation, following the successful establishment of cheetah habitats in Kuno National Park and Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary.
The third habitat, Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve, located in the Bundelkhand region, spans approximately 2,339 square kilometers across Sagar, Damoh, and Narsinghpur districts. Established in 1997, the reserve was designated a tiger reserve in September 2023 after being integrated with the Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary. The area is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including tigers, leopards, various deer species, bears, and is crucial for conserving the endangered Indian vulture species.
Special arrangements have been made for the protection and adaptation of the cheetahs, with approximately 439 hectares of secure habitat equipped with modern enclosures. The Forest Department is ensuring the safety, regular monitoring, and healthcare of the cheetahs, as well as maintaining a healthy ecosystem for other wildlife in the reserve.
CM Yadav's release of the cheetahs, named Vyom and Neera, is expected to boost wildlife tourism in the Sagar and Bundelkhand regions, creating new employment opportunities and contributing to the local economy.
