Vingroup And Alstom Sign Technology License Agreement To Develop Hanoi’s Next-Generation Urban Rail Network

Hanoi, Vietnam – Vingroup and Alstom have entered into a Technology License Agreement (TLA) and rolling stock contract, signaling a significant step towards developing Hanoi's next-generation urban rail network. Under the agreement, Alstom will transfer technology for train manufacturing and assembly in Vietnam, supplying 200 Metropolis trainsets to propel the operation of the city's urban rail projects.

The 200 trainsets will all be new-generation five-car trains, featuring advanced design elements such as aluminium car bodies that reduce axle load, energy consumption, and track wear. These trains will also boast a wide-body design for increased passenger capacity and a fully automated, driverless operation at the highest grade of automation, GoA4. The braking system combines regenerative and disc brakes to enhance safety while recovering energy during braking.

Alstom will manufacture the first 83 trainsets at its Valenciennes Petite-Forêt site in France, one of its metro centers of expertise. Beyond supplying the 83 trainsets, Alstom will offer technology, engineering expertise, tooling support, and key components, empowering Vingroup to develop local capabilities for manufacturing and assembling the subsequent 117 trainsets in Vietnam.

The partnership between Vingroup and Alstom is poised to bolster Vietnam's self-reliance and modernize its rail industry infrastructure. It also presents opportunities to establish a long-term industrial partnership and gradually amplify Vietnam's involvement in the global value chain. Alstom CEO Martin Sion highlighted the agreement as a major milestone for the rail technology leader in one of the fastest-growing mobility markets globally, emphasizing the strength of French rail technology and Alstom's position as a trusted partner for major mobility projects across the region.

Vingroup, the general contractor for Hanoi's metro projects through its subsidiary Vinhomes, aims to connect world-class international resources, technologies, and expertise with the strong execution capabilities of Vingroup's ecosystem. As a key player in Hanoi's urban rail network development, Vingroup's strategy involves progressively expanding the city's rail capabilities to contribute to the city's urban mobility landscape and enhance the quality of life for its residents.
