Pyroptolysins are versatile, sterol-sensing bacterial toxins
Gasdermin pores mediate cellular self-sacrifice for the immune defense pyroptosis. Here we describe how the gasdermin fold was repurposed during evolution into a membrane targeting bacterial toxin.
