Kenya records 1st Ebola death after man travels between several countries
Kenyan health officials confirmed on Tuesday the country’s first Ebola death as an outbreak in the nearby Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to spread.
Kenya has recorded its first Ebola fatality after a man, who had previously lived in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) for seven years, died following his journey across several countries. The patient, a 40-year-old man, was confirmed to have the Bundibugyo variant of Ebola, a rare strain for which there are no vaccines or treatments.
The man fell ill about a month ago while in the DRC and was treated in multiple hospitals. He then traveled to Kampala, Uganda, by road and subsequently boarded a flight to Nairobi, Kenya's capital, on October 3. After a public health screening at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the patient was isolated and transferred to Nairobi Hospital, where he ultimately passed away on Monday evening.
Kenyan health officials believe the patient knowingly sought medical assistance upon realizing his illness and arranged transportation to the hospital. Dr. Patrick Amoth, the director general of Kenya's Ministry of Health, stated that the patient's symptoms might have been masked by medications, leading to a false positive screening at the airport.
As of October 3, Kenya has confirmed 8,854 Ebola cases and 4,114 deaths in the DRC, with 824 patients currently in isolation. The country's case fatality rate stands at 48.2%, and contact tracing has improved to 73.8%. Health officials are working diligently to identify 28 contacts of the deceased and prepare for the quarantine of 23 additional passengers and four crew members from the same flight.
Efforts to prevent the spread of the disease include maintaining public health protocols, encouraging frequent hand washing, and avoiding close contact with those showing symptoms. Kenyan authorities are collaborating with neighboring Uganda, the World Health Organization (WHO), and other local partners to mitigate the risk of community transmission.
