Google Docs and Drive now support markdown files natively

Google Drive and Google Docs are now offering native support for markdown (.md) files, a development fueled by the growing use of markdown files in the AI era. While Google has been gradually integrating markdown support into Drive for several years, the latest update allows Drive and Docs to open, edit, and fully utilize markdown files. This includes real-time editing and commenting capabilities with accurate rendering of markdown formatting.

The update also benefits AI use cases, enabling AI agents to collaborate on documents and sync with Gemini Notebook. Users can now handle markdown files directly in Google Docs, eliminating the need to change file types, manually convert files, or sacrifice Docs' real-time editing and commenting tools. Google Drive also now supports rendered markdown, allowing users to view fully formatted, beautiful documents with clickable links and structured tables directly within Drive.

According to Google's Chandu Thota, markdown has become the common language between humans and AI agents. Starting today, the markdown support in Google Drive and Docs is rolling out, potentially taking up to 15 days to appear for everyone. The feature is enabled by default, even on admin-controlled accounts.
