The UAE's Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) and Dubai's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) have strengthened their collaboration to combat financial crime involving virtual assets. The two organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on October 5 to enhance information sharing and coordination in identifying and addressing risks in the virtual assets sector.
Ali Faisal Ba'Alawi, Chief of the UAE FIU, and Matthew White, CEO of VARA, signed the agreement, emphasizing the importance of cooperation in the face of increasingly sophisticated financial crimes and cross-border nature of the crime. Ba'Alawi highlighted that the agreement would help detect and analyze suspicious activity more effectively, thereby safeguarding the UAE's financial system.
Vara pointed out that the MoU would consolidate and strengthen the existing collaboration between the regulator and the FIU, enabling better sharing of expertise, early identification of emerging risks, and coordinated action against illicit activities. Both authorities agreed that continued cooperation with regulators, law enforcement bodies, and the industry was crucial to achieving their objectives.
The UAE FIU, established within the Central Bank of the UAE, receives suspicious transaction reports from various financial institutions and designated non-financial businesses and professions. The FIU analyzes these reports and shares the results with competent authorities to support efforts against money laundering, associated criminal activities, terrorist financing, and proliferation financing.
VARA, established in March 2022, is responsible for regulating and supervising virtual assets and related activities across Dubai's commercial zones.
