RuneScape 4 is a new Unreal Engine MMO which reportedly grew out of a planned Dragonwilds expansion, though it's still a long way off

Jagex, the developers behind the long-running MMO franchise RuneScape, have unveiled RuneScape 4 at this year's RuneFest. Currently unnamed, the game is set to be built using the Unreal Engine and is still in the early stages of development. Jagex's vice president of studios and next-gen development, Jesse America, explained that RS4 was born from a planned 2027 expansion for survival spin-off RuneScape: Dragonwilds.

The new MMO will expand upon the worldstate established by Dragonwilds, incorporating popular MMO features like persistent servers and trade hubs. Set in Gielinor during the Sixth Age, RS4 will begin in a region called Ashenfall, first explored in Dragonwilds. Ashenfall, located northeast of Gielinor, will undergo significant changes by the time RS4 takes place, years after the events of Dragonwilds and the destruction of the Dragon Queen Kuldra.

Jagex emphasized that RS4 is not a replacement for any of their existing RuneScape titles, but rather an additional way to experience Gielinor. The company also announced that RuneScape Reignited, a new permanent character type debuting on December 2nd, will allow players to start fresh and explore the game's world through a revamped lens.
