OPINION: Will Lhuan-dré Pretorius reach the heights that Dewald Brevis hasn’t?
Much is going to be expected of rising talent Lhuan-dré Pretorius after his record breaking exploits.
South African cricket sensation Lhuan-dré Pretorius has astounded the world with two recent world records. At just 20 years old, the rising star recently broke Chris Gayle's individual T20 scoring record by hitting an unbeaten 188 off 79 balls against the Knights in the Pro20 Cup in Bloemfontein. This surpassed Gayle's remarkable 175 not out off 66 balls set during the 2013 Indian Premier League.
The record followed Pretorius joining a select group of players as the youngest player from an ICC full member nation to score a T20 international century when he scored 101 off 53 balls against Namibia last month.
Yet the burning question on many cricket fans' minds is whether Pretorius can maintain his impressive form and become one of the Proteas' best players across all formats of the game. His natural ability has been compared to another rising talent, teammate Dewald Brevis. Much like Pretorius, Brevis showed immense promise, claiming the previous South African T20 individual scoring record by blasting 162 off 57 balls in 2022.
However, Brevis' career has been marked by inconsistency despite holding the individual T20 international scoring record for a South African batter - a 125 off 66 balls against Australia last year. Now 23, Brevis remains an inconsistent performer, rarely a Proteas regular across longer formats. With the pressure to fulfill the potential that once marked Brevis, Pretorius now faces a daunting challenge.
Can he live up to the massive expectations and become a cornerstone of the South African cricket team? Only time will tell if this young prodigy will reach the lofty heights that his namesake, Brevis, could not.
